Website, App, or Both for Your Business?

Three Things to Consider in the Ever-Changing World of eCommerce
In the early days of the internet, a business person didn’t need to worry if they needed a website or app.
Things were simpler. You built a website to promote your product or service. Then, people would call or stop by your brick-and-mortar storefront to make a purchase. With the inception of Amazon, eCommerce came into vogue. Soon, you were able to sell items directly from the website. Things were good.
Then smart devices blossomed, and more people turned to their phones or tablets. Thus, businesses began to create apps which were more interactive to take advantage of the new technology. Soon enough, companies utilized multiple digital platforms to provide information and draw in consumers.
It’s Your Turn
Now, you’ve decided to start a business. As you passed out your business cards, people asked about your website or app. You answered, “I’ll have one soon,” without giving them a sense if you’re going to have one or both.
According to a 2016 survey, 96% percent of Americans shop online using both websites or apps. As more established businesses move away from physical establishments to online environments, this may reach 100% at some point in the future. So, you want to get in on the action as soon as possible.
Before you decide if you need a website or app … or both … here are three factors to consider.
What Do You Offer?
There are certain products which work better on a website over an app. Take as an example selling property. If you’re a real estate agent, you want the power of a website for its increased bandwidth and storage. It also provides a larger space to display floor plans and detailed images.
On the other hand, if you want to offer recorded meditations, like 1 Giant Mind, then an app is more relevant for your business. Not only is there less need for enormous amounts of storage space, but it allows the customer to meditate anywhere at any time.
What Security Precautions do You Require for Your Website or App?
Whether it’s a website or app, maximum safeguards need to be taken in order to protect your customers’ Personal Identification Information (PII). Should someone steal their credit card data or social security numbers, you and your business will be given a black eye which may take a long time to heal.
What may help you decide is a study by Northeastern University. It revealed there were 40% more leaks of PII from mobile websites than there were of applications. Therefore, if this the main concern, you need to perform research on app developers, their platforms, and the guarantees they make to ensure all PII is strongly protected.
What is Your Budget?
This may be the biggest factor in your decision to market your business on a website or app, or decide to utilize both. Designing an eCommerce website, whether on a dedicated platform like Shopify or an open source Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress.org, can be an inexpensive choice if you take on the design chores. And, if you take time to learn HTML or Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), you can boost the look and performance of the user interface.
In contrast, unless you’re a coder on the side, you’ll probably need to hire developers to help you design your app. And, depending on your requirements, it can take a chunk from your budget. Especially if you deal with a product requiring a good deal of data compilation. For this, you need a team of developers. One will enhance the speed and organization of back end processes. The other will utilize front end coding to make it look good for the user.
